Bisti/De-Na-Zin Wilderness, nestled in the high desert of New Mexico, is a surreal landscape that spans 45,000 acres. The remote and rugged landscape is known for its otherworldly rock formations, towering hoodoos, and colorful badlands. Translated from the Navajo language, Bisti (Bis-tie) means "a large area of shale hills." De-Na-Zin (Deh-nah-zin) takes its name from the Navajo words for "cranes." The wilderness preserves a rich geological history, with fossils of ancient creatures embedded in rock formations made of interbedded sandstone, shale, mudstone, coal, and silt. It's a photographer's paradise, especially during sunrise and sunset, when the desert's hues transform into a breathtaking palette of reds, oranges, and purples.

We found a super-cheap campground just outside of Taos, New Mexico. It makes a great basecamp for a weekend of exploring this storied destination!

Carson National Forest, located in northern New Mexico, is a pristine natural haven of 1.5 million acres of rugged mountains, lush forests, and alpine meadows. This area is the ancestral homeland of several Indigenous peoples including the Taos Pueblo, Picuris Pueblo, Jicarilla Apache, and others. Today it offers a wealth of recreational opportunities, including hiking, camping, and wildlife viewing. The forest is home to iconic peaks like Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest point. With its rich biodiversity, scenic beauty, and a variety of ecosystems, Carson National Forest stands as a cherished destination for those seeking solace and adventure in the heart of the Southwest.

Join us for a short little walkabout around the lovely grounds at the 16th U.S. President's Boyhood Home. 

Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park is two separate farm sites in LaRue County, Kentucky, where Abraham Lincoln was born and lived early in his childhood. He was born at the Sinking Spring site south of Hodgenville and remained there until the family moved to the Knob Creek Farm northeast of Hodgenville when he was 2 years old, living there until he was 7. The parks include both the farmsteads associated with each residence as well as collaborating sites nearby, which recall other chapters from Lincoln's life in Kentucky. These parks tell the story of Abraham Lincoln's formative years and include historic structures, artifact collections, living history demonstrations and educational programs. Visitors can tour both the birth cabin site and Knob Creek Farm. It’s a great place to walk in the footsteps of one of America's most beloved presidents, and gain a better understanding of the man who shaped our nation's destiny.

After scouring the gravel & dirt roads of Hiawatha NF for over an hour, we found a perfect spot next to a creek. We searched so you don't have to!

Hiawatha National Forest, named after the legendary Native American figure, is a stunning natural gem in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, covering approximately 880,000 acres of diverse wilderness. According to the oral tradition of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people, Hiawatha is often depicted as a wise and influential leader who helped unite the five nations—the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca—into a powerful alliance. One of the notable features of Hiawatha National Forest is its vast network of trails, allowing visitors to explore the area's pristine rivers, numerous waterfalls, and stunning shorelines on foot, bike, or horseback. The forest nestles up against the coastlines of Lakes Superior, Huron and Michigan, and features six historic Michigan lighthouses. The forest is also home to a rich variety of wildlife, including white-tailed deer, black bears, bald eagles, and numerous bird species. There are excellent opportunities for camping, fishing, boating, and hunting. And with its abundant snowfall, the forest becomes a haven for snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, and snowmobiling.

A short tour of our quiet (apart from the chorus of cicadas) campsite along the Ouachita National Recreational Hiking Trail in western Arkansas.

Ouachita National Forest, spanning 1.8 million acres across Oklahoma and Arkansas, is the oldest and largest National Forest in the South. It offers a diverse landscape of rolling hills, lush valleys, and crystal-clear streams. Towering pine and hardwood trees provide a haven for wildlife, including black bears and bald eagles. For thousands of years the Caddo, Quapaw, Osage and Choctaw Nations inhabited this region. Today it is a haven for hikers, with scenic trails like the Ouachita National Recreation Trail. Visitors can also camp, fish, and enjoy scenic drives.

Crater of Diamonds State Park in Murfreesboro, Arkansas, is a unique 37-acre site, the world's only public diamond-producing area. Visitors can search for diamonds and other precious gemstones. Its geological history began around 100 million years ago as an ancient sea bed with volcanic activity. Magma carried diamonds from the Earth's mantle to the surface through underground pipes, forming a distinctive "lamproite pipe." Erosion exposed the pipe, creating the park's namesake crater. In 1906, the first diamond discovery triggered a rush, and many significant diamonds have since been found. The park's geological diversity attracts both gem enthusiasts and scientists.

Custer Gallatin National Forest is a stunning wilderness area located in southwestern Montana, traditionally the land of the Crow, Shoshone, and Blackfeet tribes. With over 3 million acres of breathtaking landscapes, it is a nature lover's paradise. The forest is named after General George Armstrong Custer and Albert Gallatin, Treasury Secretary under Presidents Thomas Jefferson and James Madison and a scholar of Native American languages and cultures. The forest is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including grizzly bears, wolves, elk, and mountain goats. There are six separate mountain ranges within the forest including the Gallatin, Madison, Bridger, Crazy, Absaroka, and Beartooth Ranges. With its spectacular natural beauty and abundant resources, the Custer Gallatin National Forest is truly a treasure of the American West.

Red River Gorge Geological Area, located in eastern Kentucky, covers over 29,000 acres of land and is known for its breathtaking scenery, sandstone cliffs, and unique geological formations. The gorge was formed over millions of years by the Red River and its tributaries cutting through the sandstone layers, creating a deep and rugged canyon. Archaeological evidence suggests the area was inhabited by the Shawnee, Cherokee, and Osage people for thousands of years before European settlement. The area is home to over 100 natural arches, including the iconic Natural Bridge, and numerous waterfalls. Home to several endangered species and protected by the Daniel Boone National Forest, the Red River Gorge is a federally-designated National Geological Area, National Natural Landmark, National Archaeological District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With its stunning natural beauty and rich geological history, the Red River Gorge Geological Area is a must-see destination for anyone visiting Kentucky.

This is our review of a free campsite in the Toppings Lake dispersed camping area in Bridger-Teton National Forest near Grand Teton NP. 

Grand Teton National Park is a must-see for anyone visiting the western United States. The park encompasses the Teton mountain range, the Grand Teton peak, and the valley known as Jackson Hole. It’s a popular destination in summer for mountaineering, hiking, backcountry camping and fishing. The Grand Teton is the tallest mountain in the park, and offers incredible views of the surrounding area. There are over 200 miles of trails to explore in the park, and you can float down the Snake River in a canoe or kayak. The Grand Teton National Park is a serene and beautiful place, and is well worth a visit.

Digby Neck peninsula extends between the Bay of Fundy and St. Mary’s Bay in southwestern Nova Scotia, Canada. This peninsula is known for its rugged coastline, picturesque fishing villages, and stunning natural beauty. The Mi'kmaq are a First Nations people of the Northeastern Woodlands, who are indigenous to the areas of Canada's Atlantic Provinces, and approximately 34,000 members live in Nova Scotia today. The area is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including whales, seals, and bald eagles. Visitors to the area can enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, kayaking, and whale watching, or simply soak up the peaceful coastal atmosphere.
