It preserves and interprets the world's largest historic US military small arms collection, along with historic archives, buildings, and landscape. The site is a must-see for anyone interested in American history or military technology. Go to park pageThe Tuzigoot National Monument is a 2- to 3-story pueblo ruin on the summit of a limestone and sandstone ridge just east of Clarkdale, Arizona. The Tuzigoot Site is an elongated complex of stone masonry rooms that were built along the spine of a natural outcrop in the Verde Valley. The central rooms stand higher than the others and they appear to have been used for public or ceremonial purposes. The views from the top of the ridge are amazing! You can see for miles in every direction. The Tuzigoot people were a small group of agriculturalists who settled in the Verde Valley around A.D. 1000. Visitors can take self-guided tours of the ruins, hike trails through the surrounding terrain, and picnic in the shade of the ancient pueblo walls.
Go to park pageWinding through the Ozark Mountains for 151 miles, the Buffalo National River is a fantastic place for hiking, kayaking and camping. It's one of the few rivers that have been left undimmed in the lower 48 states - and also a great place for stargazing when the sun sets. Located in Northern Arkansas, the Buffalo River was the first National River to be designated in the United States. The National River designation protects natural rivers from industrial uses, other uses that change the natural character of the river. The river flows from west to east originating in the highest part of the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks and ends in a wide alluvial plain bordering Crowley's Ridge. Along its journey, it passes through many different types of landscapes including hardwood and hemlock-lined gorges, towering bluffs, open pastureland and fertile farmland. Despite its location in a largely rural area, the river has come under increasing pressure from human activity in recent years. Pollution from farming and livestock operations has been a major problem, and efforts are underway to promote conservation practices that will protect this important resource.
